Representatives from BC Ferries joined the Westview Ratepayers Society’s town hall event virtually on June 29, 2026, to discuss recent adjustments to route 17 service between Comox (Little River) and Powell River (Westview).

Our team gave a short presentation (available here) outlining the rationale, intended outcomes and early data on the recent adjustments to the route. We also heard directly from community members about online accessibility concerns, medical travel challenges and how these changes might impact them moving forward. The meeting also provided a valuable opportunity for community concerns to be raised and documented, and for our teams to listen.

The meeting drew significant attendance and the team received a number of questions to take away. A summary of the questions and responses will be shared on this page, and to the Westview Ratepayer's Society once available.

For information about the changes to route 17, making a reservation, and fare options check this page.

For additional questions or support in making a reservation, please contact Customer Care at 1-888-BC-FERRY (1-888-223-3779).

Travel demand on Route 17 continues to grow, and BC Ferries is introducing changes this summer to improve travel certainty, reduce congestion, and make better use of available space during peak periods.

    Why this change is needed

Route 17 is a ferry‑dependent connection for coastal communities and an essential service for daily travel, medical appointments, and important life events.

    Since 2019:

    • Vehicle traffic on the route has increased by about 25%,
    • Advance bookings have grown by more than 300%,
    • During peak periods, demand exceeded capacity on thousands of sailings, leading to long waits, terminal congestion, and customers being left behind.

    What’s changing

Recent improvements at Little River terminal are increasing vehicle holding capacity and separating drive‑up and reservable traffic to improve traffic flow and reliability.

Starting June 15, 2026, BC Ferries will:

    • Expand advance booking options on Route 17
    • Continue to offer drive‑up space on every sailing
    • Better balance demand across sailings throughout the day

These changes are designed to improve loading reliability and help more customers sail as planned.

    More affordable travel options

BC Ferries is also expanding lower‑cost travel options on Route 17 this peak season, including:

    • More than 25,000 Saver fares expected to be available this peak season
    • New Saver fare options for both under‑height and over‑height vehicles
    • A limited‑time promotion offering free travel for children aged 11 and under on select bookings.

These options build on recently introduced tools like booking alerts and digital waitlists, which help customers plan ahead during busy travel periods.

More details on reservable space, fares, and timing are available here.

BC Ferries engagement staff will be on board the Salish Orca in early June sharing information and answering questions ahead of the June launch.

In Mid-March we met with Sunshine Coast Tourism and the Sunshine Coast Chamber of Commerce as part of our ongoing effort to strengthen relationships and listen directly to local perspectives.

Our focus in these meetings was to listen to concerns and better understand local priorities. We heard clearly how critical ferry service is to the Sunshine Coast’s economy and quality of life, and we appreciated the openness of the discussions.

These conversations are part of a broader engagement effort on the Sunshine Coast and are happening ahead of additional meetings with the Sunshine Coast Regional District and other local partners, in addition to the project related engagement upcoming later this year. We look forward to continuing the dialogue and closing the loop on questions as work progresses.

Beginning in fall 2025, a pre-booking only model will be introduced for all vehicles travelling from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo (Departure Bay). The option to purchase ‘At Terminal’ fare will no longer be available (except to foot passengers). This change is required in order to better manage traffic and the flow of vehicles, and to accommodate a 25% reduction in space at the terminal during the critical infrastructure renewal project at Horseshoe Bay.

To better understand customer choices and preferences for booking travel, we surveyed customers who use this route in spring 2025 and engaged with customers onboard. This survey is now closed.
