Village Bay Terminal Project
Welcome to the Village Bay Terminal Project Page
Village Bay terminal on Mayne Island plays a vital role in connecting the Southern Gulf Islands to Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. It supports essential travel for residents, visitors, goods, and services, and is a key part of the region’s transportation network.
As part of BC Ferries’ ongoing commitment to safe, reliable, and efficient ferry service, we are planning necessary upgrades to aging infrastructure at Village Bay terminal. These improvements will help extend the life of the terminal, improve operational efficiency, and support the future needs of the communities we serve.
Planning for this work is underway, and this page will be home for updates on project timelines, scope and any potential service impacts.

During the session attended by 44 people, we provided an overview of the project and draft information around the alternate schedule and service plan.
To view the engagement boards, please visit the Document Library on this page or click here: bcferriesprojects.ca/48332/widgets/208743/documents/160367
This information session was promoted in the community through posters, print ads, social media, and on vessels.
Key Themes
During discussions around the alternate schedule, some key themes emerged:
The importance of sharing the schedule early to support customer planning.
To inform communities across the Southern Gulf Islands network about the schedule shifts to accommodate this critical work.
Summary of Information
Timeline:
Berth 1 closure: January 5 – March 1, 2026 (8 weeks)
Construction period: 16 weeks total, with work expected to wrap up by end of April 2026
During the closure, Berth 2 will remain open to support Southern Gulf Islands (SGI) sailings. A revised sailing schedule will be in effect to help minimize congestion at Village Bay.
The construction contract has been awarded, and the contractor is preparing to start building offsite before construction begins in January. Schedule updates are being finalized and will be posted on the BC Ferries website in early November.
Next Steps and Communication
Our project team is now focused on preparing for the upcoming Berth 1 work. We will continue to share updates as the project advances — both here on the project page and within your community.

Village Bay Project Introduction
Share Village Bay Project Introduction on Facebook Share Village Bay Project Introduction on Twitter Share Village Bay Project Introduction on Linkedin Email Village Bay Project Introduction linkBC Ferries is planning necessary infrastructure upgrades at the Village Bay Terminal, a key hub connecting the Southern Gulf Islands. The terminal’s main marine structures are reaching the end of their service life, resulting in operational, and maintenance concerns. This project will not only extend the life of these critical components but also ensure the terminal is ready to support a new class of vessels that will be introduced on this route in the coming years.
What’s Happening
As part of the life extension project, key berth components will be reviewed and replaced, including:
- Vehicle ramp replacement
- Ramp abutment and batter piles replacement and repairs
- Abutment apron and hinges
- Skirt plates and finger joint coatings
- Ramp tower
These upgrades are essential for maintaining safe and reliable operations at the terminal and for preparing Village Bay for future vessel deployment.
Construction Timeline
Construction is expected to last approximately three months, with up to eight weeks of full berth closure for berth one. During this time the following will be completed:
- Removal of aging structures
- Installation of new infrastructure
- Ramp tower upgrades and associated works
What to expect during project work
We understand how vital ferry service is to everyday life in the Southern Gulf Islands — whether it’s getting to medical appointments, accessing supplies, or simply staying connected with loved ones. We know that any change to service can be disruptive, and that’s why we’re doing everything we can to limit the impact of this necessary work through careful planning and coordination.
To reduce impacts on customers and the ferry network:
- Berth closures are scheduled for January–February, when traffic is typically lower, to help minimize inconvenience
- During the closure, Berth Two will remain in service to ensure essential ferry service continues
- Connections for Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen, which see the highest volumes of travel, have been maintained when and where possible
- Some inter-island transfer routes may be adjusted or involve slightly longer travel time
We are committed to keeping the community informed and supported throughout this project and thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. Your feedback is important as we continue to refine our approach.
BC Ferries is working closely with internal operations teams and the fleet to establish detailed sailing schedules and docking sequences to help maintain service reliability during the upgrade period.
