June project update
Hello Mayne Island community members,
We’ve received a few questions about the work underway at the Village Bay Terminal. To help keep the community informed, we’ve compiled those questions below and provided responses to each.
Why does there appear to be ongoing work at Berth 1?
The contractor has completed the work required to return Berth 1 to service. However, some remaining scope items could not be completed earlier due to material procurement delays. With some of the material now available, the contractor has returned to complete the remaining work, which is not expected to impact day-to-day berth operations. Some timber related tasks are still outstanding due to long procurement lead times.
Why was the Berth 1 load limit reduced?
Per our March update, the new ramp and abutment have been designed and built to accommodate highway loads up to 63,500 kg. However, achieving this operating capacity for the berth is subject to ongoing engineering assessments of the existing structures, including the towers and ramp apron. The engineering assessments of the existing structures have now been completed, and the required repairs are currently underway. Upon completion of these repairs, the berth will be restored to its full operating load limit of 63,500 kg. To ensure safe operations during this period, Berth 1 is currently operating under a load limit of 39,500 kg.
When will this work be completed?
The outstanding tasks the contractor is completing, as well as the upgrade work on Berth 1, are scheduled to take approximately three weeks from the time of this post.
When is work scheduled for Berth 2?
The Berth 2 project remains in the preliminary design stage and is anticipated to begin in January 2028. The type of work is subject to assessment by consultants and should entail ramp upgrades for up to 12 weeks, depending on the magnitude of the scope. We will be sure to keep you informed when there is an update to share.
Thank you once again for your patience while this work is being completed.
