March project update

Hello Mayne Island community members,

Thank you for your patience and understanding during the Berth 1 closure at Village Bay and the revised sailing schedule across the Southern Gulf Islands network while this important infrastructure work was underway. We recognize that service changes can be disruptive, and we truly appreciate the community’s support and flexibility during this period.

I’m pleased to share an update on the work that was completed during the closure period:

  • Vehicle ramp replacement: This work included the removal of the existing aging ramp and installation of a new ramp structure to support safe and reliable vessel loading and unloading.

  • Abutment replacement: This included the demolition of deteriorated timber components and the construction of a new concrete and steel abutment designed to support the upgraded ramp system.

  • Apron repairs: This work included plate repairs and recoating of the existing apron to ensure safe and efficient vehicle access.

  • Electrical upgrades: This included the replacement and upgrading of wiring, fixtures, and related components to meet current safety and operational standards.

The Village Bay terminal will open on Thursday, March 19th as scheduled.

Highlights and remaining work:

  • The new ramp and abutment have been designed and built to accommodate highway loads up to 63,500 kg. However, achieving this operating capacity for the berth is subject to ongoing engineering assessments of the existing structures, including the towers and ramp apron. Until the required modifications are identified and implemented, the berth will operate under a load limit of 39,500 kg.

  • The remaining work on the towers and timber dolphin will be executed with no impacts to operations.

Thank you again for your patience and cooperation while this work is completed. These upgrades will help ensure safe and reliable service for the Mayne Island community and the broader Southern Gulf Islands network.

Thank you,

Jameson Mtanga
