Crofton and Vesuvius Terminal Projects

Overnight utility work at Crofton Terminal has been extended and is now scheduled to continue from August 3–5, 2026.

Contractors will be completing underground electrical and utility work in support of the Crofton Terminal Project. Residents in the surrounding area may notice increased noise overnight as crews work to complete this critical phase of construction. Equipment on-site may include hydrovac trucks, excavators, saw cutters, compactors, paving equipment, and other construction tools.

BC Ferries and its contractors will make every effort to minimize impacts on nearby residents while completing the work as safely and efficiently as possible. We apologize for the continued inconvenience and appreciate the community's patience.

This work is expected to take place between 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and may result in some construction-related noise in the area. There are no anticipated impacts to ferry service or customers during this work.

Between Sunday, July 26, and Thursday, July 30, 2026, contractors will be on-site completing underground electrical and utility work to support the Crofton Terminal Project.

Work will take place nightly between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Activities will include excavation, underground utility installation and restoration work. Temporary traffic control measures will be in place to safely accommodate construction activities, and there will be no impact to ferry service as a result of these activities.

Residents in the surrounding area may notice increased noise during these overnight work periods. Equipment used will generate additional noise, including, but not limited to, a hydrovac truck, excavator, saw cutter, compactor, paving equipment, and other construction tools and equipment. Every effort will be made to minimize impacts on local neighbours as we work efficiently and safely to complete this critical work. We apologize for this inconvenience.

The overnight utility work is necessary for the project, which includes building a new layby berth for anticipated new two-ship service, along with repairs and upgrades to the existing berth and trestle structures to improve safety and reliability.

The new two‑ship service anticipated to begin in 2027 will increase capacity by 20% and is expected to ease traffic congestion at the Crofton terminal by increasing sailing frequency, helping vehicle queues move more smoothly and reducing backups onto nearby roads.

The Crofton and Vesuvius Terminal Projects are currently underway. These important projects are part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, reliable marine infrastructure and supporting future service improvements on the Crofton-Vesuvius route.

Construction began in May 2026 and will continue until summer 2027. As the project continues into early 2027, we are working to minimize impacts on service as much as possible and will communicate any disruptions well in advance. Any alternate service planning will be informed by feedback from community, commercial and essential users gathered in the coming weeks.

To reduce impacts on communities and customers:

• For any required night work, we will make every effort to minimize noise, light and service impacts.

• The required multi-day berth closures are currently planned for January when travel demand is lower to help minimize disruptions.

• We are coordinating with emergency and essential services to ensure reliable access is maintained during any closure periods.

• We are committed to early and consistent communications so residents and communities have time to plan.

BC Hydro work

As part of the BC Ferries Crofton and Vesuvius Terminal projects, BC Hydro will be conducting required work at the Crofton terminal.

Current plans indicate that BC Hydro will be undertaking overnight excavation and utility works from June 16 through June 25.

BC Hydro will also be issuing their own notifications to the community. The current BC Hydro work schedule is:

• June 16 – Night Shift (9:00 PM – 5:00 AM), primarily on terminal property and part of BC Hydro's scope to upgrade their system
• June 18–24 – Day Shift (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM), various locations along Chaplin Street, with June 21-24 work being part of BC Ferries project-related BC Hydro work
• June 21-25 Night shift work as part of BC Ferries Project-related work (POSTPONED)
• June 25 – Night Shift (9:00 PM – 5:00 AM), part of BC Hydro's scope to upgrade their system

This work is not expected to affect regular ferry operations, and no sailing cancellations or schedule changes are anticipated.

Project Updates

This important project is part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, reliable terminal infrastructure and supporting future service improvements on the Crofton-Vesuvius route.

The project includes building a new layby berth for anticipated new two-ship service, along with repairs and upgrades to the existing berth and trestle structures to improve safety and reliability. A layby berth is used to park vessels overnight or when not in use. The new two‑ship service anticipated to begin in 2027 will increase capacity by 20% and is expected to ease traffic congestion at the Crofton terminal by increasing sailing frequency, helping vehicle queues move more smoothly, and reducing backups onto nearby roads.

Construction

Construction activity details can be found in the posted Service Notice. Starting in May 2026, construction will typically take place Monday to Friday, between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. During this time, customers and nearby residents may notice increased activity and moderate noise levels at the terminal.

Pile installation is expected to take place from mid‑May through mid‑June. Where possible, we will provide advance notice of higher‑impact activities and take steps to minimize disruption. We will also work to limit impacts to service throughout this project and communicate any schedule changes or disruptions as early as possible.

Sailing Cancellations

At this time, there are no planned sailing cancellations related to the current construction work underway at the Crofton terminal.

If cancellations become necessary to safely support construction activities, we will make every effort to minimize impacts on customers and will provide as much notice as possible.
