The Denman East terminal plays a critical role in connecting the Denman and Hornby Island communities. As populations on both islands grow, we want to ensure the terminal remains safe and easy to access.
Right now, the terminal is creating safety concerns for many at peak times. The terminal upgrades are focused on addressing these concerns, including reducing roadway congestion and creating safer, easier access to the terminal for vehicles and walk-on passengers.
At the same time we've heard concerns from the community about the environmental impact of removing the trees around the terminal. We plan to address these concerns, and discuss mitigation measures at our upcoming engagement sessions at the end of May. See below for more information.

In the summer of 2023, we significantly enhanced service between Buckley Bay and Denman West (route 21) and Denman East to Hornby Island (route 22). The feedback we heard from staff and community about the increased service was overwhelmingly positive, but we want to ensure we’ve captured all your feedback on your travel experience last summer.
How your feedback will be incorporated
We’re well underway with summer 2024 planning, using last year as a model. Your feedback in this survey will help us better understand how well that service is meeting the community's needs and can help us adjust our future service planning efforts.
We commit to keeping you informed, listening to and acknowledging your concerns, and providing feedback on how your input is being considered in our decisions. We will do so by sharing the outcomes of this survey and how we plan to respond to what we’ve heard on our Community Pages.
Overview of Summer Service Enhancements
Last year we received many positive comments about the summer service enhancements from staff and community members. Here’s what we noticed:
Shorter wait times
Less traffic congestion at our terminals
Frequent clearing of traffic congestion when it did happen
Better customer experience overall
Outlined below are the changes made in 2023 alongside what is currently planned for summer 2024.

BC Ferries is working to improve ferry service for residents of Denman Island and Hornby Island. As part of this work, we want to hear your thoughts, concerns and aspirations for two key initiatives: the Denman Island East Terminal Project and enhanced summer service on Routes 21 and 22.
We know you bring valuable insight and we’re listening. The following short survey should take 10-15 minutes to complete. We appreciate your feedback and willingness to help us make changes that meet the needs of the Denman and Hornby Island communities.
UPDATE: Thank you to all those taking the time to respond to the survey, we have already received over 90 responses to date!
We have recently been made aware that some participants are receiving an error message when attempting to complete the survey. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate the frustration this has caused. We have addressed the issues and participants should no longer be required to enter email addresses. We have also removed a link we believe was leading participants away from the survey before they were able to complete it. We will continue to monitor to ensure everyone has the opportunity to provide their comments and feedback and we have extended the survey until June 16 to provide additional time for community members to give their feedback.
If you continue to receive an error and cannot complete the survey, or you would prefer to leave your feedback via email, please reach out to us at engagement@bcferries.com
Note: While logging in is not required, if you would like to do so to complete the survey, you will need to create a login profile for this engagement portal (bcferriesprojects.ca), which will be different than your bcferries.com login.
