hybrid electric vehicle docking at terminal

Shearwater terminal plays a critical role in connecting the North and Central Coast communities and we recognize our role in providing an essential service for customer who travel on the route. It is our job to keep people moving safely and reliably, and with this focus, investments in vital upgrades to the marine infrastructure at the terminal are being made.

Work at the terminal will include installation of new berth structures including new supports for the ramp (abutment), a new ramp and concrete pontoon structures. In addition, upgrades will be made to the existing floating lead. The design of the new ramp will result in the return of regular operations for the Northern Sea Wolf with a new single lane ramp and an increased load limit of 63,500 kg.

We are thrilled to inform you of the successful completion of the Shearwater Terminal Project, and resumption of regular service for the route starting October 11, 2024!

The new marine structures and upgrades include a new steel ramp and concrete pontoon together with new supports for the ramp and pontoon plus upgrades to the existing floating lead. The new single lane ramp has an increased load limit of 63,500 kg.

It has certainly been six full months of dedicated effort by our contractor and project teams, and we also recognize it takes community and collaboration to make these projects truly successful. The teams have really enjoyed getting to know everyone while working on site, including Charlie and Finn, two local dogs who became our unofficial team members.

We also want to acknowledge Heiltsuk Nation for their collaboration and contributions to this project. It was one of the highlights of our teams time on Denny Island having Elders from Heiltsuk Nation share their history and stories, creating a meaningful personal connection with our team.

As a result of this work, the berth at Shearwater Terminal will continue to provide safe and reliable essential service for many years to come.

Travellers can find the northern routes schedules here and reservations are now available and can be booked directly at bcferries.com or by contacting our Customer Service Centre at 1-888-223-3779.

Our crews are ready and eager to welcome you back through the terminal and on board!

    Interesting Facts about the work:

    • 100% of the steel fabrication was on Vancouver Island in Cowichan Bay
    • The floating concrete pontoon was fabricated in Campbell River and then floated to the site allowing for precise construction and reduce the risk of delays the project
    • 410 tonnes is the total amount of steel which went into the project for the pontoon, ramp and piles
