Spring 2023 Community Drop-in
about 1 year agoWe want to know what is important to you, and your community.
As we continue to work on building the connection between communities and BC Ferries, our goal is to create opportunities to collaborate and hold meaningful conversations. One of the ways we are doing this is through our community drop-in sessions. These sessions are a chance for us to hear directly from those who live, work and play in the communities we serve, and for community members to connect with us face-to-face.
Ahead of our arrival, you have an opportunity to provide us with questions, comments, and topics that you would like discussed at the next session. Leave your feedback below, or like other community members' posts to help us shape our conversations.
To view some of the information we will be sharing at the community drop-in, please click here or visit the resource library on the right-hand side of the page.
Please note:
Thank you for participating. Please be aware we will not be responding to questions or posts left on this board directly. If you have specific questions and would like to speak with one of our team members, please send your question to engagement@bcferries.com
As a reminder. we are committed to providing a safe and respectful environment and one that allows everyone an equal opportunity to participate. Any disrespectful or abusive comments will be taken down. This website is moderated 24/7 by an expert global moderation team from Bang the Table. To learn more visit Moderation Policy.
SSIferryhelpabout 1 year agoGaliano to Swartz Bay - morning and evening commuter ferry
Currently BC Ferries is not meeting its role "connecting the coast". Daily the local school board pays Private corporations to ferry its students from Galiano (and other gulf islands) to and from Salt Spring. Also the local Health board regularly pays for helicopters and private boats to send people from the Galiano clinic to the Salt Spring hospital. There is a shortage of skilled workers on Salt Spring - yet I can fill one of those roles if there was a morning ferry from Galiano to Salt Spring and an evening ferry from Salt Spring to Galiano. There are numerous teachers, parents, contractors, etc. that would use that service if it was available. Currently if I go to Salt Spring from Galiano - I have 2 hours to return to the ferry - which eliminates the ability to work. I would be able to work full-time instead of struggling with part-time work on Galiano.

I think the current BC Ferries system is very inefficient and ineffective to have ferries travelling directly past Sturdies Bay on the Vancouver - Victoria route. Instead you pay extra ferries and extra fuel to have a separate Vancouver - Galiano and Victoria - Galiano route - that is a waste of fuel, waste of staff resources, capital resources, etc. If there were one or two daily ferries that went Tsawwassen - Sturdies - Swartz Bay and then return back Swartz Bay - Sturdies - Tsawwassen on would allow simultaneous use of ferries for the Vancouver-Victoria route, the Vancouver - Galiano route, Victoria to Vancouver and Victoria to Galiano.

BC Ferries is fortunate to be able to work with 13 Ferry Advisory Committees (FAC) located in communities up and down the coast of British Columbia. These committees are typically made up of 8-12 volunteer members who represent the ferry-dependent communities we serve. Ferry Advisory Committees play a fundamental role in facilitating information sharing between communities and BC Ferries. The committees provide important advice and insight that helps inform day-to-day operations, terminal and vessel improvements, schedule changes, and other initiatives.
