Neighbourhood Check-in Fall 2023
8 months agoWe want to know what is important to you, and your community.
As we continue to work on building the connection between communities and BC Ferries, our goal is to create opportunities to collaborate and hold meaningful conversations. One of the ways we are doing this is through our community drop-in sessions. These sessions are a chance for us to hear directly from those who live, work and play in the communities we serve, and for community members to connect with us face-to-face.
We understand not everyone is able to attend the upcoming drop-in on Wednesday, September 27 between 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm at Mansons Hall on Cortes Island in person. Therefore, this page is available as another opportunity to provide us with your questions, comments, and topics that you would like to discuss. Leave your feedback below, or 'like' other community members' posts to help us shape our conversations.
Please note:
Thank you for participating. Please be aware we will not be responding to questions or posts left on this board directly. If you have specific questions and would like to speak with one of our team members, please send your question to engagement@bcferries.com
As a reminder. we are committed to providing a safe and respectful environment and one that allows everyone an equal opportunity to participate. Any disrespectful or abusive comments will be taken down. This website is moderated 24/7 by an expert global moderation team from Bang the Table. To learn more visit Moderation Policy.

Chelseaover 1 year agooffload people traveling to cortes in order
I love living on Cortes, but when tourist season starts I start getting really bothered with the way the bcferries conducts business. The tourists are great, but the ferry system is not. Up until recently we had a dedicated Cortes lane ( lane 7) but honestly it didn’t work that well. It didn’t work because a person could show up 3 hours early and still be offloaded behind a car, or worse, an rv that takes up 4/5 car spaces, that showed up 2 hours later. This on many occasions has made the difference of making and not making the connecting Cortes ferry. I know people on the ferry advisory board have attempted to get the Quathiaski cove crew to unload in order. A request that was denied. Honestly it would be so helpful to residents ,and fair to residents and tourists alike, to reinstate the Cortes lane on the Campbell River side and have the crew offload the Cortes traffic in order. If that’s not possible I think an even better idea would be to have two ferries running at the same time between Cortes and Quadra during the busy season. I know that’s a pipe dream though.

With the 2 Quadra ferries, a ferry in the morning could be used to go around Cape Mudge and bring people directly to CR and same on the way back to Cortes later in the day.

Cortes Island residents depend on Campbell River for basic public services: our healthcare, our schools, and our social services. Reliable access to these services is essential to live for all Cortes residents. It should not be Islanders responsibility to pay for a hotel if they are overloaded on their way home. BC ferries needs to ensure that all island residents can get home. Cortes Islanders already adapt to having less frequent ferries and longer travel times. BC Ferries must prioritize equitable access to ferries by acknowledging that Cortes Island residents already face greater costs of time and money to get to town. I sincerely hope BC Ferries will reconsider their removal of lane 7 and bring back priority loading.

Work with community & ferry crew to create online reservations for morning runs from Whaletown. Pre-parking is wasteful of time & fuel & unfair to singles, couples/families without 2 vehicles & to those who live farthest away. It is crazy to have a second vehicle make two roundtrips from home to have one in the lineup. Eliminate the unnecessary emissions. Reservations can be managed with a morning attendant at Whaletown using internet access. BC Ferries has two lot attendants in Q Cove to manage traffic & can handle Cortes assured loading at 9 am Monday & Thursday. They have an onshore attendant at Heriot Bay in the busy season. I am not suggesting booking every space or paying the same fee as mainland reservations. Let's get down on the options & find one that works.

When the ferry docks at night, all of the interior and deck lights are left on, and this reflects off of the water and illuminates the entire house. It’s quite arguably light pollution. I understand that exterior vessel lights are required for overnight safety, but can’t the interior and deck lights of the vessel be turned off overnight to make for a better neighbour by BC Ferries?

Your Ferry Advisory Committee
Campbell River - Quadra Island - Cortes Island
Chair: Michael Lynch - mlynch.fac@gmail.com
BC Ferries is fortunate to be able to work with 13 Ferry Advisory Committees (FAC) located in communities up and down the coast of British Columbia. These committees are typically made up of 8-12 volunteer members who represent the ferry-dependent communities we serve. Ferry Advisory Committees play a fundamental role in facilitating information sharing between communities and BC Ferries. The committees provide important advice and insight that helps inform day-to-day operations, terminal and vessel improvements, schedule changes, and other initiatives.

- On January 17, 2023, after 58 years of service the Powell River Queen put in her final day of work on the Campbell River – Quadra run. Here’s a look at that final day and a glimpse into what the ship has meant for the workers who have served onboard, and alongside, and the communities it has connected.
